AC
Today I leave for Atlantic City. I will be there for 2 or 3 days, depending on Friday’s room availability. I will be staying at the Borgata, which is by far the best casino outside of Vegas (and vastly superior to all but a few there) and the only place in Atlantic City worth mentioning. Their poker room is perhaps the nicest in the nation in terms of ambiance and comfort. The chips are the worst I have ever seen in my life because they have magnets in them (making shuffling and other chip tricks a chore) but everything else there is top notch, as you would expect from an MGM casino. I was there during the U.S. Poker Championships at the Taj last August (just before the Borgata’s WPT event) at which time they had only been open a month or two. Their dealers were fairly good when I was there last time, so I can only anticipate their staff will be exceptional by now.
Oddly enough the inspiration for my trip came from PISTOLGREEK, the guy I mentioned in an earlier post who played me heads up and lost a total of over $3,000 to me in less than 2 hours. I was talking to him in a tournament and he turns out to be a fairly intelligent guy. As I suspected he is pretty wealthy, and apparently he goes to Atlantic City once a month to play the $400/$800 mixed games, which he claims to be beating. Of course poker is like driving in that every man alive thinks he is above average at it so I have no idea exactly how well he really is doing in these games. He claimed that he is strong in other games but weak in Hold’em, which could very well be true since it is fitting with what I know of the high limit professionals in Atlantic City. They all seem to be masters of stud, Omaha, and split games but weak at Hold’em.
Anyway this guy (who’s name is Pete) asks me if I would like to come to Atlantic City where he would stake me in a $400/$800 game. I figured that these games were all rotation games, and though I would love to play $400/$800 I would not feel comfortable playing in a game where ¾ of the time I would be the worst player there, even if it is with someone else’s money.
So he offered to stake me in whatever the highest hold’em game was which I am told is usually $75 /$150. In the end though I decided not to even bother for a few reasons. First the whole thing sounds rather suspicious, and I can’t shake the feeling that he just wants to somehow beat the hell out of me. Second, I can stake myself in a $75/$150 game if I really want to take a shot. I may just do this if the first couple days go well. And third, it would require me going to the Taj Mahal, which is the biggest shit hole I have ever seen.
So I think I am just going to hang out at the Borgata the whole time, maybe play some super-satellites for their big WPT event this year (they have good structure), and maybe run some live no-limit and $30/$60 or $40/$80. So wish me luck.
