Almost Home
Last night I went to dinner with the Quiet Lion. We went to the steakhouse at the Las Vegas Hilton ( I previously hadn't even realized such a place existed) and split a bottle of '97 Heitz Cellars Cabernet, which I really liked. That was followed by prime rib and potatoes au gratin. As a rule I never eat desert, but the rum cake was just too tempting so I indulged.
I picked Richard's brain a bit about everything from poker to wine, which is fairly new to me but I think one of his favorite topics. Previously everything I knew came from the book/movie Sideways. Richard apparently concurred with Rex Pickett's belief that Merlot sucks, which I can't argue with since I haven't yet found one that I liked.
It was good food and good conversation. I wish I could have hung out longer but I was feeling tired and stuffed up from this awful cold so I decided to just head back to the room. I called off going out for drinks with everyone and just played on Party Poker instead. I probably wouldn’t have played for very long, especially since I won $2k in the first hour, but I went on a horrible downswing and found my self stuck over $2k after a seemingly impossible string of bad beats occurred. I nearly broke my mouse on one hand where I lost with AA to 33 after the flop came AQ2 rainbow and the 33 called a two bets twice on the flop (the guy capping with me had AQ I think), turned a gut shot, called a raise, and rivered a straight.
So I ended up playing a 5 hour marathon session, tired, sneezing, and coughing, and somehow managed to leave a $1,500 winner. That put me up a little over $6k in ring games on the trip, averaging about 2.35 bb/100 at the $20 game so far, which adds up to over $300/hr after rakeback.
From talking to Richard it sounded like the Plaza fields have gotten much tougher, which isn’t much of a surprise, and I'm actually feeling worse than I did yesterday so I decided to sit out the $3k event and just ring game it in the hotel room today, winning about $800 in 4 hours. We had lunch at the Rainforest Café, which was undoubtedly the worst dining experience I've had yet, between the mediocre food, exorbitant prices, and screaming baby a table over. We've eaten at the Wolfgang Puck Bar and Grille here 3 or 4 times and I wanted to try something different, even though the food there is pretty good. Now I wish I hadn’t.
Tomorrow is the last day out here, and I'll likely spend it playing on Party Poker. If I feel any better maybe I'll try to set up a dinner somewhere, though it doesn’t seem likely. I picked up a cough which seems to be getting worse daily.

Please approve meals with me in the future. The Rainforest Cafe is about the only place in the MGM you can get a bad meal. Well, the buffet sucks too.

Your stat of "300/hr after rakeback" makes me smile, it's becoming part of the vernac.
