Rejoining the Party
Well, Prop Site turned out to be a lot less profitable than I thought it would. It's hard to win money when there aren't any games to play in. I guess I must have just gotten lucky the first week because after that games grew more and more scarce.
I did end up winning a little bit on there, though not enough to make it worth the time spent. I don't even know how many hours I spent just sitting, waiting for someone to play with me. Even when someone did play they never seemed to stick around for more than 15 or 20 minutes. Somewhere around 75% of the people who played with me just wanted to hit and run, generally either losing a grand or winning $300 within 10 minutes and then moving on. A few of them were $5/$10 regulars who wanted to take a shot. Not a very good idea really, but I'm glad they did as they were by far the easiest opponents I found.
Some of the people who I'd played against the first week or so vanished entirely and a few just wouldn’t play whenever I sat down at a table alone with them. Prop rules force you to play 3 handed but not heads up so there wasn't much I could do about it other than try to goad them into it. Most just said "let's wait for another player". Oh well.
If anything I'll be glad to not have to deal with that software anymore. It really was terrible. I wouldn't have thought software that bad could exist. I played a little bit on Doyle's Room the other day and it made that software seem like Poker Stars. Doyle's software has greatly improved since I played it last, which was probably close to a year ago, but it still isn't what I'd call good.
So it's back to Party. For reasons I can't really get into here I have an account there that is hard to fund. Getting money out of it is easy, but putting money in is a slow, painstaking process. At first I was only able to get a couple thousand in it and was playing a little $5/$10 6 max while waiting for games at Prop Site. Damn those games are easy. I had forgotten how bad people are there. You get used to the bad players at something like $30/$60 and tend to forget that even the median player there would be the best player at almost any $5/$10 game.
So I took my couple grand and ran it up a little, playing 2 tables at a time for 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there, quitting whenever I got an opponent at Prop Site, and then was able to deposit a few grand more. I now have about a $15/$30 roll in there and played that a bit today. I had also forgotten how good those games are. I don't know if it's just that I've improved a lot since I last played those games, or that the good players all moved up, or if there is just a new crop of suckers, but I don't remember the games being that good in the past. I remember them being good, but just not that good.
In any case I won't be playing them long. I'll either win or find a way to deposit enough money to get back to the $30 games within a couple weeks. I could just give them a shot now but I'm afraid that if I take a big loss it'll be weeks until I can get enough money in to play them again. Better to play it safe.
Actually it's almost like being on a limited bankroll again, but without any of the pressure since in this case I can only go broke temporarily and only on one site. Losing all of my money on there now just means that I can't play until I manage to deposit more, not that I have to go find a job. It's been a couple years since I was really at any risk of going broke even temporarily so this is as close at it gets for me, and that's how I like it.
I think I'm going to just keep playing on there until I'm at the $100/$200 level. It shouldn't take too long really. I'll keep depositing as much as possible until I get to the $30/$60 level. After that I'll just stick with a fairly conservative 500bb bankroll and move up. That basically means I need to win about $30k to play $50/$100, and then another $50k or so to get to $100/$200. I should be able to do that within a couple months. If I do poorly, well, I have enough money outside of Party Poker to live off of for a few years. Let's hope I don't have to use it.
